We all know that candles are a great way to set the mood and encourage people to relax + unwind. Most of us remember to use candles when setting up for a dinner party, a romantic evening at home, or when drawing a hot bath at the end of a long day, but I think that often we yogis forget that candles can be an amazing way to enhance our home practice, as well.

How can you use candles to make your yoga practice an even more amazing sensory experience? Here are 5 ways to incorporate candles when practicing yoga or meditation at home.

5 Ways Candles Can Enhance Your Yoga and Meditation Practice Reflection + Clarity Medium Jar Candle and Love + Passion Large Jar Candle from the Chesapeake Bay Mind & Body Collection

1. Choose scented, aromatherapy candles that include natural essential oils with properties that promote the energy + vibe you’re going for in your practice. For instance, if you want your practice to be quiet and peaceful, I would suggest using a scent like Chesapeake Bay Candle’s Peace + Tranquility Candle, which features a cashmere jasmine aroma made up of fresh, clean, and airy notes of lily of the valley and bergamot. The scent of this candle allows you to escape into the comforting arms of exotic jasmine, cotton blossom, and rose as they soften the atmosphere and soothe.

2. Use one candle’s flame as a driste or focus for your meditation. I love scattering a number of burning candles around my home practice area, but I definitely suggest placing one large candle in front of your mat or meditation cushion to use as a focal point. By focusing on a flame when coming into a balancing pose or practicing dharana meditation, you’ll find that you’re able to turn inward much more easily. Chesapeake Bay Candle’s Focus + Patience Candle is a perfect fit for this use. The grey, muted color of the jar and birch tar, cedarwood, and patchouli scent help you to push distraction aside and hone in on the burning flame at the tip of the wick.

3. Set up your candles as an altar in front of where you’ll be practicing and use them as a constant reminder of what you want to embody as you move. Doing a vigorous, heated practice? Practicing with candles in front of you can be a beautiful reminder of what you want to cultivate as you flow; place candles on an altar to represent stoking your inner fire, igniting your prana within, and embodying the fiery, solar energy of the sun. Looking for the right candles to create your altar? I suggest using variety of heights and colors to create a visually-pleasing display, and be sure to include Chesapeake Bay Candle’s Joy + Laughter Candle- it’s cedarwood and mahogany scents ground this fragrance as a touch of spice adds complexity to an overall light and gleeful air.

4. Turn off all of your lights and devices and practice by candlelight. This is the perfect way to expedite your relaxation experience. Candlelight doesn’t emit any blue light (like your devices do) so your brain and eyes can relax, and the soft, yellow tones provide just enough of a glow that you can see what you’re doing. Added tip: practice with a partner and light one of Chesapeake Bay Candle’s Love + Passion Candles to turn this evening practice into a way to connect romantically. This candle is made up of creamy coconut, vanilla and sheer musk scents.

5. Use candles in colored jars so that you can choose colors that symbolize + enhance the mood you want to cultivate while practicing. For instance, if you’re looking for more clarity in your life or practice, I would suggest using a candle like Chesapeake Bay Candle’s Reflection + Clarity Candle. It comes in a soft, blue glass jar that is the color of the sky and the sea, so it’s quite soothing to the eye and the mind. The essential oils orange, chamomile, lavender, laurel, patchouli, and tea help you to find clarity, as well ;)

Oh my, doesn’t this post make you want to go light some candles and start doing some cat/cow stat? I know it’s making me want to get off of my computer and do a much-needed home practice with a side of candles right now...
